This one is a bit more detailed, so here’s your table of contents:
1. Why we spend so much time, energy and additional cash to make the EcoQube Air even better.
2. Water testing electronics and further protecting it.
3. Further reinforcements to the electronic connections.
You already know about our failsafe grow tray that makes it nearly impossible for water to flood the Qube, and now we’ll tell you the other safety features of the Air.
1. We spent a TON of time everyday living and breathing the EcoQube Air with our incredible engineering + design team. We prototyped as fast as possible so with every slight iteration, we can look for ways to improve by even just 1%.
Even if we spend more time and money, we believe perfecting the last 1% is crucial to making not just a beautiful but failsafe product.
2. So with one of the final prototypes, we sprinkled water all over the electronics to see what might potentially happen if an accident might’ve happened.
We purposely powered the EcoQube at just 24V so that it’s SUPER SAFE but we’ve invested a lot into a injection molded BOX + clear extrusion to cover the electronics. We’ve since gone even further to invest in additional tooling to create an INJECTION molded silicone cover over the slightly exposed edge connector. All this is to protect the electronics in case of a light spill.
3. Also to protect the edge connector from wear and tear, we’ve decided to invest even more into INJECTION molding the fan compartment covers to add two extruding pegs that ensure the stability of the electrical connections over time. They’re placed there to guide the greenhouse and hold it in place, and to make sure that sudden movements don’t damage the connector.
We’ve done everything we can to make the EcoQube Air water safe but, larger spills or extended exposure to water on the electronics may still cause short circuiting and is not covered under warranty. As you’ve seen above, we’ve done literally everything we can to make the EcoQube Air as amazing as possible.
As you can see, we’re working hard to make sure that the EcoQube Air is the most energy efficient, beautiful, modern and safest desktop ecosystem. Let us know what you think of these additions!

As we mentioned in Backerkit, shipping for any add-on EcoQube Cs will be free around the world.
Production of 2000 EcoQube Airs is set to be completed by November 1st. All of the manufactured units will then be loaded on a boat to the US, and we will begin shipping as soon as our fulfillment center receives them!

Scheduling the daily cycle for your EcoQube Air is easy and intuitive, just tap the mode (night light, sunrise, grow lighting, lightning storm, etc..) and the hours you want it to run and the EcoQube Air will automatically sync and follow the schedule. And of course, you can change the color of the RGB LEDs on the fly!
We’ve also improved the design of the Air in a few places before beginning production. We’ve added a failsafe drain at the top rim of the grow tray that will ensure water cannot spill over into the electrical components even in the event of clogging. We’ve also added a waterfall effect where the water is introduced. This not only aerates the water, but allows a nice, even spread of water across the whole grow tray.
The EcoQube Air has been a project for us for a long, long time, and we’re so excited to finally see it come to life.

Fertilizer & Kokedama Info

Hi Backers!
We’ve got some cool new info about two of our EcoQube Air add-ons. If you’ve already filled out your backerkit survey, you can still add these and other add-ons to your order. And for those 300 of you who haven’t yet filled it out, time is running out! Though we will fulfill your order regardless of when you fill it out, your shipment may be delayed if you submit the survey after the deadline.
Fertilizer
We’ve partnered with NPK Industries to produce a soluble nutrient base specifically designed for hydroponic systems.
Traditional fertilizers (like animal refuse), work by providing nutrients to the soil, which indirectly feeds the plants rooted within. In hydroponic systems, there is no soil, so the fertilizer must directly feed the plant. This means the fertilizer must contain three critical elements, Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium (NPK). While we’re still working on the optimal balance of the three, our fertilizer will cater to large, healthy, leafy herbs and plants.
When you get your EcoQube Air and fertilizer, you’ll simply need to add the designated amount of fertilizer to the water basin every so often and the fertilizer powder will dissolve into the water. In addition to ensuring optimal growth, we’ve also ensured that the resulting nutrient solution works seamlessly in our hydroponic system, not clogging the pump or gumming up the interior.
The Parlor Palm (Neanthe Bella) is one of the more compact of the palm family of plants, making it the ideal choice for use in the EcoQube Air. The plant is extremely hardy, able to thrive in a wide range of light and humidity levels, meaning it would be effortless to take care of even outside of the ideal conditions of the EcoQube Air.
On top of that, the palm particularly adept at filtering dangerous chemicals out of the air, even earning itself a spot in NASA’s Clean Air Study.
Schefflera
Schefflera plants (or Umbrella trees) are another brand of popular, compact house plant. Unlike, the Parlor Palm, the Schefflera requires a bit more care, in that it must get sufficient light. Luckily, the EcoQube Air’s carefully designed system of grow LED’s is the perfect environment to grow this houseplant, even when no true sunlight is available at all.
Like the Parlor Palm, the Schefflera plant was also listed in NASA’s Clean Air Study. The plant will help to scrub the air clean of potentially harmful chemicals like formaldehydes. For more information on the benefits of Air Filtering Plants, check out our blog post about it!

Hydroponic Grow Medium

What’s up, backers!
Almost everyone has filled out their backerkit surveys by now, which is great! If you haven’t yet, get on that quick! We’re going to lock down the Backerkit Surveys on August 23rd, but until then it will remain open to give you a chance to amend your order and throw in some additional add-ons.
On that point, today we want to tell you all about our unique, custom designed grow mediums for your EcoQube Air. We learned a lot about plant mediums and how they interact with both the plant roots and the water that runs through it in our previous campaign and we’ve taken that knowledge and used it to design the ultimate hydroponic plant medium.
Far from the simple polymer sponge blocks in most hydroponic units, the EcoQube Air’s medium takes up the entire grow tray, giving the plant roots the maximum amount of space to grow through. Each grow medium is grid of sponge-like polymer foam containing expanded clay pellets. The porous foam absorbs and holds water as well as gives form to the medium. The expanded clay pellets by contrast will absorb excess water, preventing the growth of fungus and “root rot”
Every EcoQube Air comes complete with a medium all ready to go and it last for the whole life of the plant or plants growing in it. However, switching out plants in your EcoQube Air will require you to switch out the medium as well, so for those of you that want lots of different plants all the time, pick up a bunch! We designed and created this grow medium specifically for use in the EcoQube Air, and it’ll never be cheaper than it is right now for our original backers!

Hello again, Backers!
BackerKit surveys are still coming in and we’re adding on a ton of addons to our shipment for you guys. But if you haven’t filled out yours yet, make sure you do soon!
Last week we told you guys about the Kokedama addon and it seems like you guys are just as excited about them as we are! We got a lot of great feedback from that so now we want to share some details about the EcoQube Air air filter.
These custom made, dual stage, HEPA Type filters are the first line filtration for all the air passing through your EcoQube.Each unit acts as both a mechanical filter and a chemical filter to remove as many different types of pollutants as possible before the air is filter biologically through the plant growing within. The fine, HEPA-type mesh (the white folded material) acts as a mechanical filter removing any particles in you air 100 microns or larger, like dust, pollen or pet dander. Second, the air passes through a layer of activated carbon which acts as a chemical filter. The carbon absorbs a number of chemicals, vapors, and odors as the air passes through it.
A great example of the same filtration method is the new “Bioweapon Defense” filters in the Tesla Model X! Ours is just a tad smaller.
In fact, we custom designed this filter to fit perfectly in the filtration compartment of your EcoQube Air, which is easily removed for quick filter replacements. Each filter is rated of 6-months of use, but accumulation of dust and particles will cause them also lose efficiency the longer they run, that's just the nature of air filters. For maximum air filtration, we recommend swapping out filters every 3 months.
Just for our Kickstarter backers, the EcoQube Air filters are the cheapest we’ll ever offer them at 2 for $25, 4 for $40 and finally 8 (two years of maximum filtration) for $60. So make sure you stock up on your Backerkit survey
